The USA Intends to Build Military Bases in Romania and Bulgaria
The Pentagon is going to spend $110 million for building bases in Romania and Bulgaria. According to the American Stars and Stripes newspaper, construction works in Romania, for which $50 million had been allocated, are due to be completed in two months, while the Bulgarian base, according to expectations, will be put in commission only in a couple of years ? in 2011 or 2012.
According to the present plans, 1.6 thousand American servicemen are assumed to be located in Romania, and 2.5 thousand in Bulgaria. At present in both countries joint exercises with the participation of 2 thousand American soldiers are being carried out. They are to be completed at the end of this month.
Bases construction is done under the program of redeployment of American troops overseas, which was announced by former president George Bush in 2004. Its basis is the maintenance of at least 55 thousand US military men in Europe with their transfer from Germany to the territory of new NATO allies from among East European countries.
